The Boeing 737 project started in 1964 when the engineers wished to build a new type of plane that has the nose of the Boeing 707 and the fuselage cross section of the 727, capable of accommodating six seats in a row. Boeing 737-100 was intended to be a small, short-range passenger jet that carries 65-80 seats, but Lufthansa, as its initial customer of the new plane, insisted expanding the capacity. Boeing 737 is much cheaper than 747. In 2010, Air China bought another 20 Boeing 737-800 for US$1.398 billion.
