Two striking events happened in Japanese arena on Nov. 13. The Dalai Lama, who has been engaging in activities to split China for a long time, gave a speech to some Japanese congressmen in the morning to continue to denigrate the Chinese government’s minority nationalities policy. More than 200 congressmen who listened to his speech announced to set up an alliance to support the Dalai Lama. The other is that 80-year-old former Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara met the press to announce the founding of “Party of Sun” in the afternoon, meanwhile continuing to slander China wantonly.
The two events indicated that “Chinese elements” have become a component that Japanese politics cannot ignore on the one hand and Japan’s policy against China is going astray on the other hand. Of course, the right-wing forces play an important role in them.
There are many factors behind Japanese Congress members’ attendance to the Dalai Lama’s lecture. First, many Japanese congressmen felt depressed on the dispute of the Diaoyu Islands because the current situation of the Diaoyu Islands is unchanged even though Japan spent a sum of money buying it. Moreover, Japan’s islands-purchasing behavior not only failed to get support of international community but also brought heavy loss to Japanese economy. Therefore, they felt depressed and hoped to find a new outlet.
Second, Japanese congressmen found the United States’ frictions against China focus on the international rules and values, but Japan’s frictions with China mostly occurred in historic recognition and territorial disputes that will hurt the feelings of Chinese people and infringe China’s national sovereignty. Therefore, they wanted to follow the example of the United States and intervened more in the minority issues of China. In a word, Japan adopted a hostile attitude toward China in politics.
