Fireworks explosion

An explosion and ensuing fire at a fireworks workshop in Wanzai county, Jiangxi Province, on Friday evening killed seven people and injured six, local government said.

Five victims were killed by a collapsed house and the fire destroyed five houses.

The county said the workshop belongs to an enterprise registered in Hunan Province. To evade supervision, the enterprise illegally operated the workshop in Wanzai.

Its legal representative is being held in police custody for investigation.

The State Administration of Work Safety on Friday asked local authorities to organize safety checks at firework factories prior to Spring Festival on February 9, when fireworks will go on sale across the country.
