Geng Yansheng, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China (PRC),announced at the regular press conference of the MND held on November 29, 2012 that:
Firstly, at the invitation of the Department of Defense (DOD) of the United States, Lt. Gen. Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), will lead a delegation and leave for the U.S. to jointly hold the 13th China-US Defense Consultations with James N. Miller, the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from December 12 to 13, 2012. The both sides will have an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on such issues of common concern as China-U.S. bilateral relations and China-U.S. military-to-military relations, maritime military safety, international and regional issues and so on.
Secondly, agreed by the defense departments of the two countries, the tabletop exercise of China-U.S. joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief will be conducted from November 29 to 30, 2012 in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China's Sichuan province. The exercise is divided into such four stages as mission initiation, force projection, joint rescue operation and task handover and evacuation with the subject of joint humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in earthquake. The aim of the exercise is to exchange the experience obtained in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operation, explore the ways of joint rescue operation, enhance military mutual trust and improve the level of pragmatic cooperation of the two militaries.
