A Donghua University student collapsed and died after finishing a 1,000-meter run at the school's campus in Songjiang district, local media reported Wednesday.
The student, an Anhui Province native who was studying at the College of Foreign Languages, passed out shortly after crossing the finish line, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post.
The run was part of a regular physical examination that students at the university must take.
The student, who was in his third year, was treated on site by a campus doctor. He was then rushed to the nearby Shanghai First People's Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Hospital doctors made every attempt to resuscitate the student, the report said. The cause of death remains under investigation.
"There is always a small possibility that someone will die during a long run," said Shi Zhaoquan, a respiratory doctor at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital. "The student may have had a heart condition or a problem with the blood vessels in his brain. People can die suddenly without experiencing any symptoms."
The university has suspended the 3,000-meter run that was scheduled for next week in order to avoid potential danger, according to the news report.
The Global Times placed several calls to university officials that went unanswered Wednesday.
