Four local officials including Wu Kaifa, director of Zixi county's forestry bureau in Jiangxi Province, and Peng Zhihua, head of the local Gaofu forest farm, were dismissed Wednesday for negligence in a poaching case, a day after CCTV exposed the scandal.
A deputy director surnamed Tan from the publicity department of the CPC Fuzhou City Committee confirmed to the Global Times that the local police have arrested five suspects for poaching wildlife and running restaurants that served the animals. Another four suspects remain at large.
Meanwhile, three shops that bought the poachers' kill, and three that sold hunting goods including leg-hold traps have also been shut down, said Tan.
According to video footage, seven macaques, a nationally protected primate, and other wild animals were shot using homemade guns at the Gaofu forest farm. The farm's rangers did not stop the poachers or report their crime.
The poachers also set baited traps to capture some animals. They then sold the animals to local restaurants that surreptitiously served the animals to customers.
The poachers also sold their kill to shops, some of which were certified by the provincial wildlife protection authority to deal in wildlife.
The authority could not be reached as of late Wednesday.
