LJUBLJANA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia began the presidential election run-off on Sunday which will see some 1.7 million eligible voters casting their votes in about 3,300 polling stations across the country.

Former prime minister Borut Pahor, winner of the first round on Nov. 11, is expected to defeat incumbent Danilo Turk to become the president of the country, opinion polls showed.

Slovenia, with two million people, declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.

Slovenia's president, with a five-year term, is largely a ceremonial post. However, as head of state, the person is custodian of the national constitution and the supreme commander of the country's armed forces.

Preliminary result of the presidential run-off is expected to be available at 7:00 p.m. local time (1800 GMT).
