Spain's disabled people protests against austerity

MADRID, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Over 10,000 disabled people demonstrated in the center of Madrid on Sunday in protest of government's austerity measures under the banner "SOS Rights for the Handicapped, Save Inclusion and Wellbeing."

"This is the first time we have taken to the street so that the country's politicians know we are on the verge of collapse," the President of the Spanish Committee of Handicapped People (CERMI), Luis Cayo Perez said on Spanish TV network RTVE.

The government of Mariano Rajoy has said it will cut 2.68 billion euros (3.48 billion U.S. dollars) from the care budget between 2013 and 2014.

"The cuts are doing a lot of damage and the dismantling of the social budgets of many banks as a result of their problems and of all of social policy which they have been carrying out for several years, has made matters much worse," said Jose Luis Aedo, the President of the Spanish Confederation of Families with Deaf people.

Sunday's match is the latest in a series of protests held in Madrid. Last week also saw demonstrations by health service workers and police officers.
