Despite some diplomatic mistakes, the Chinese government has adhered to an independent foreign policy of peace that aims for a more reasonable international political and economic order since the founding of the People’s Republic of China more than 60 years ago.
China has adopted a consistent foreign policy with different focuses in different eras, from combating imperialism and colonialism, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, and opposing hegemony and the Cold War to peace and development, cooperation and mutual benefit, and democratization of international relations and diversification of development path, and then to the new security outlook, respect for diverse civilizations, pursuit of common development, and establishment of a harmonious world and harmonious neighborhood.
The evolution from “peaceful coexistence” to “harmonious coexistence” is due to the changes of the time, and marks the progress in China’s great diplomacy.
At present, there are two quietly competing “great diplomacy” strategies in the world. One aims for a peaceful world ruled by the United States based on American values, and the other pursues a harmonious world established by China based on the philosophical principle of harmony in diversity.
