URUMQI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has raised its minimum monthly and hourly wages, local authorities announced Friday.
After the wage hike, which will take effect on June 1, minimum monthly salaries before deductions for pension, unemployment, medical insurance and housing payments are expected to be raised to 1,520 yuan (248 U.S. dollars), 1,320 yuan, 1,240 yuan and 1,160 yuan under four subdivisions, according to a press conference of the regional human resources and social security department.
Minimum monthly salaries in the region will be increased by an average of 16.14 percent, the department said.
Minimum hourly wages, which will be increased by 1.8 yuan, will range from 11.6 yuan to 15.2 yuan across the region.
China adopted a minimum wage system in 1993, under which base rates in different provinces, municipalities or autonomous regions are decided by local governments.
