A man has been charged with endangering public security in a drink-driving accident that led to four vehicles, including a police car, colliding, Huangpu District prosecutors said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Lu, 22, was driving along Xizang Road M. when he was stopped by a traffic officer for a road check at about 8am on December 7.

An alcohol test showed Lu was over the limit? testing 1.09 micrograms per milliliter. The legal limit is 0.8 ml/mg.

When police asked Lu to get out of his car, he drove off. A police car chased and bumped his car when the officer tried to stop him, prosecutors said.

But Lu did not stop and instead hit a minivan on Dongdaming Road which crashed into two other cars on the opposite lane. Lu told police he had been drinking wine with friends in a bar the night before.

The total damage for the collision was estimated at nearly 60,000 yuan (US$9,684), prosecutors said.

Under Chinese law, the crime of endangering public security can merit the death sentence.
