Free ride on regular ships available to all troops stationed on islands of Guangzhou Theater

GUANGZHOU, November 13 (ChinaMil) -- Three officers and men of a coast defense regiment under the Guangzhou Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) presented their "transportation certificate of the troop unit stationed on Islands" and were given priority of boarding a regular ship sailing out of the Dawanshan Island on the morning of November 8, 2013.

Water transportation is the only way for personnel and materials of the troop units stationed on the island getting into and out of the island, and is also a long-standing problem plaguing the troops. The three services of the Guangzhou Theater have their own transportation system respectively, resulting in decentralized management, huge difficulty in coordination and low efficiency in support.

Shu Yuehua, director of the Military Transportation Department under the Guangzhou MAC of the PLA, told reporter that currently, all the troops and materials of the three services of the Guangzhou Theater stationed on islands have priority of taking free ride on regular ships with the certificate, and related departments will regularly pay the expenses to port and shipping enterprises.

A "special boat" support mechanism is tailor-made for troops stationed on small and remote islands where regular ships are not available. Port and shipping enterprises can dispatch small private boats and fishing boats to offer support to the troops at any time, such as transporting emergency supplies to the islands and sick and wounded personnel out of the islands.

Besides, the troops stationed on islands have built a regional emergency transportation coordination mechanism with local transportation departments and port and shipping enterprises. In case of emergencies, they can rapidly use speedboats, fishing boats and helicopters for three-dimensional support.
