Gen. Liu Yuan: To protect state's utmost interest is the duty of military

"To protect the utmost interest of the state is the very duty of the military," said Gen. Liu Yuan, deputy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) to the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) and political commissar of the General Logistics Department (GLD) of the PLA, in an interview with reporter from China.com.cn at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on March 11, 2013.

Gen. Liu Yuan said as far as the military is concerned, the servicemen are born to fight for sure. Once an order is given, it is absolutely necessary to fight and win the battle by all means. This is the duty of the servicemen in the military.

"Nevertheless, as a serviceman, I need to particularly make it clear to people what a war really is. Since we have enjoyed peace for quite a long time, many young people do not know what a war is like. It is actually very cruel and costly. If there is any alternative way to solve the problem, there is no need to resort to the means of extreme violence for solution," he said.

"Of course, China has a bottom line. Every country has a bottom line," Liu Yuan added. He held that as Comrade Deng Xiaoping once said, we should have this wisdom to clearly recognize what the overall situation is and what the best benefits are for both Chinese people and Japanese people.

He expressed that it is one of servicemen's duties to protect the utmost interests of the state and the people so that people can live in peace and work in happiness. This is the greatest significance for the existence of wars and servicemen.

Liu Yuan told reporters that in the conflict between Japan and China over the issue of the Diaoyu Islands, the establishment of Chinese Marine Police is conductive to avoiding military conflict.

"I believe that fighting is the divine duty for servicemen. However, we should try not to use war as only means to solve the conflicts and problems in civil affairs and among countries. But if necessary, he/she will certainly fight as a soldier. Once we have to fight, we will fight to win the battle," he said.

While speaking of the corruption issue, Liu Yuan said that corruption is a common problem throughout the world. Any government and military in any country cannot escape the phenomenon of corruption. Both our nation and our military have been fully aware of its seriousness, which marks a great advancement. Moreover, the civilians, including the news media, are constantly exposing and monitoring, and this is greater progress than before.
