The fans of Kunqu opera were deeply moved by the quintessence of Chinese culture performed by the outstanding old artists for a few hours. When cultural guru Yu Dan was about to come to stage to bow to the old artists on behalf of the audience, the audience clamored her down by shouting “We do not need you to represent us.”

Someone disclosed that about half of the audience came from Peking University and the other half was fans of Kunqu outside the university. Maybe it is because of their sincerity, love and reverence, the audience allowed no room for any arrogation. Some audience said that any expression is a blasphemy in the face of the quintessence of Chinese culture and these old artists.

Yu Dan responded in her micro-blog that she just wanted to bow to them and said, “China’s Kunqu has had a history of over 600 years and the age of these old artists added up to more than 600 years old. They passed down the spirit of Kunqu with their lives, so their spirit of dedication is worthy of our respect!” Yu’s sincere love and reverence of Kunqu are obvious.

Applause sometimes does not stand for sincerity, but a mechanical behavior. However, it had an unusual meaning in the hearts of the audience this time and they did not want to be bothered by secular humility. In fact, the best way to express their reverence of the quintessence of Chinese culture is not by secular humility and cliché, but by the sincere appreciation, letting the artists to speak for themselves.

“At the end of the performance, the viewers would like to listen to the old artists and communicate with them, so they became impatient when they were told that a guest would address them.” Keeping silence might be the best way in some sacred occasions.
