BRUSSELS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU)'s home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom on Tuesday stressed collective fight against cyber crimes, urging member states to implement a new rule boosting Europe's cyber defense.
"It is essential that all member states get up to speed and make cyber security a top priority.. I cannot stress enough the need for better information on cybercrime," Malmstrom said here on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, the EU adopted a new rule to support the cyber fight, in particular against large-scale attacks on information systems. Member states are obliged to implement its provisions into national legislation within a maximum of two years.
"The new directive will contribute to improve cross-border police cooperation and establish more effective monitoring systems and data collection," Malmstrom added.
The new directive introduces new offences to better prevent attacks against information systems, and improves cross-border cooperation between the judiciary and the police of member states. It also requires member states to collect statistical data on cyber-attacks and to have reporting channels in place.
