MOSCOW, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Russia is following the events in Egypt with due attention and supports all efforts to discharge tension there, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.
"We follow the events in Egypt very attentively, support any efforts aimed at stopping violence and confrontation, at stabilization of the situation, sooner transforming it into political process," Lavrov told reporters.
He added that Moscow hopes the Egyptian authorities would prepare transparent, free and just elections.
He lamented that the region has currently lost Egypt as a leading power in the Arab world.
"Unfortunately, Egyptian leadership engaged in internal problems objectively can't pay attention to the regional problems worth to be dealt with," Lavrov said.
He also expressed Moscow's hopes for sooner calming of the situation in Egypt.
Egypt's interim president Adli Mansour Monday evening approved a constitutional declaration for the transitional period, which is set to last six months.
