Chairman of Indonesian People Consultative Assembly Taufiq Kiemas passes away

JAKARTA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of Indonesian People Consultative Assembly (MPR) Taufiq Kiemas, who is also the husband of former president and chairperson of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri, died in a hospital in Singapore Saturday afternoon, a senior official of the party said.

Taufiq, 71, passed away at 18 : 05 p.m. Jakarta time in General Hospital of Singapore, senior official Pramono Anung said in a live interview with TV One.

Taufiq is also the chairman of advisory body of the PDIP, which is one of the biggest parties in the country.

The condition of Taufiq, who had long suffered from hearth problem, deteriorated early this month. He was sent to a hospital in Singapore and got an intensive medical treatment, Tjahyo Kumolo, the secretary general of the PDIP said in interview broadcast live by the television.

His body is going to be sent to Indonesia on Sunday morning and to be burried at Kalibata Hero cemetery, said Tjahyo.
