An 11-month-old child was killed last month in Pudong New Area after a car crashed into the moped she was riding with her parents, local media reported Friday.
The crash occurred after a speeding black car ran a red light at the intersection of Shenjiang and Gubo roads and collided with the moped, according to a report in the Shanghai Evening Post.
The car's driver, surnamed Jia, tried to avoid the moped, but lost control of his vehicle and crashed through the street's center barrier, the report said. The car skidded to a halt on the opposite side of the street, 100 meters away from where it had hit the moped.
The baby's mother has been suffering with severe psychological trauma since she witnessed her baby die at the scene of the crash, according to the report. The baby's father, surnamed Lin, suffered severe injuries in the crash. He remains in the intensive care unit at a local hospital. The mother was not badly injured, though she will require skin grafts.
Police said that Jia, who received his driver's license last year, was driving between 110 and 115 kilometers per hour that day, exceeding the 60-kilometer-per-hour speed limit on Shenjiang Road.
Jia admitted that he was in a rush to get back home that day to see his wife, who suspected he was having an affair, the report said. The couple had been quarrelling over the previous few days and Jia was afraid she was about to ask for a divorce.
He said he mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while approaching the intersection.
Police said Jia bore the majority of the responsibility for the crash because he was speeding and ran a red light, the report said.
