Death toll of Freeport mine incident in Indonesia rises to 21

JAKARTA, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The number of casualties in underground mine collapse at Big Gossan mine of Freeport McMorant Coppert and Gold Inc rose to 21 with 7 others remained being trapped, a statement from the firm said here Tuesday.

Ten people have been evacuated safely since the incident occurred on May 14 in Papua.

"During the evacuation as well as recovery period for those affected, PTFI (PT Freeport Indonesia) employees have been appointed to provide all necessary assistance and support to each family, which include food supply, accommodation, transportation and other daily expenses," the statement said.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on the firm to intensify rescue and ordered a full investigation into the incident.
