The troupe then demonstrates its diversity by transporting audiences back to the age of Shakespeare. "The Moor's Pavane" is based on the playwright's famous tragedy "Othello". It tells of the story of a hapless Moor, his wrongfully suspected wife, and the treachery that follows.
But what really brings down the house is "Rodeo", one of the earliest examples of a truly American ballet. With music by Aaron Copland, the plot follows a cowgirl in search of true love. At first she is ignored by the Head Wrangler, but wins his heart after transforming from a shy tomboy into a confident cowgirl. But in the end, she realizes her true love has always been her best friend, the Champion Roper. The dance premiered in 1942 and became an instant hit, and is now proving its appeal in Beijing.
