As the natural conditions such as climate and soil in Guizhou were favorable for the growth of opium poppy, and the profits of crude opium were very high, opium poppy had been planted in all the 13 prefectures in Guizhou by 1844. Soon the opium produced in Guizhou replaced that from Guangdong due to high quality. Therefor, Opium sellers stopped selling opium to Guizhou, but transported the opium produced in Guizhou to Guangxi and Guangdong, and sold it in all places there.
Along with opium planting, opium dens and opium abuse gradually emerged, and opium harms spread throughout Guizhou. The numbers of opium planting and abusers were increasing daily, and in particular the number of opium abusers rose dramatically. According to the estimation at that time, about one out of 10 people abused opium.
