The Syrian opposition has also made a notable achievement by uniting its factions within a political entity called "the National Coalition for the Revolution Forces and the Syrian Opposition" and naming Ahmed Muaz al-Khatib as its chairman.
The coalition has gained the official recognition of many countries and organizations, though it is still widely criticized for failing to crystallize a united vision over how to deal with the crisis.
Ali Mahfoukh, a political researcher, told Xinhua that Syria was on the threshold of a significant political and historical prerequisite but all parties -- the government and the opposition - - had mistakenly dealt with it.
"This prerequisite represented by a transition from the sole system to the transfer of power peacefully," he added.
He indicated that "had the Syrian authorities lived up to the democratic challenge, the country would have not reached this level of violence and bloodshed."
