There is no scientific evidence for the “doomsday” prophecy, and Dec. 21, 2012 is an ordinary day, said Ouyang Ziyuan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and senior consultant for China’s lunar exploration project, to refute the rumor that Dec. 21 is the end of the world,

As to the major supportive arguments of “doomsday” rumor, Mr. Ouyang rebutted them one by one.

Rumor says “The Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world”.

Mr. Ouyang explained the calendar began in 3114 BC, and ran in the cycle of 394 years. Dec. 21, 2012 is the final day of its 13th cycle. As the Mayan calendar was previously found to cease after the 13th cycle, some people refer to the date as Mayans’ prediction of doomsday. However, the 14th and 15th cycles of the Mayan calendar have been found, which proves that “doomsday” prophecy is just a misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar.
