"Apart from gambling at a venue named the Longteng Dog Industry Club, the suspects, including the club's owner, Jiao Jingsong, and another major organizer and participant, Liu Ruchuang, opened the gambling house and profited from the bloody fights," Deng said.

Jiao appeared on the radar of local police in July for selling tickets at 20 yuan ($3.21) to 50 yuan for access to a dog fighting performance. Further evidence regarding the gambling network was found on October 27 with the discovery of two dog fights that were having bets placed on them.

"Around 100 people were at scene, and confiscated the 600,000 yuan that had been collected, all the gambling equipment and around 30 seriously wounded dogs," Deng said, adding that the minimum bets were 100 yuan and the maximum was 60,000 yuan.

Out of sight, the blood flows

Jiao built the dog-raising kennel in Baishui township. It had 30 American Pit Bull Terriers that had been bought from the provincial capital Kunming at prices ranging from 100 yuan to 2,000 yuan.
