The 1900 Galveston Hurricane is known as one of the gravest natural disasters to ever strike the United States. On September 8, 1900, it made landfall in the city of Galveston, Texas, with estimated winds of 145 mph (233 km/h), making it a Category 4 storm on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale.
