Yangpu District Court sentenced a local man to 18 months in prison for scratching up 17 cars in a residential compound in the district, the court said Monday.
The defendant, surnamed Wu, scratched the cars on April 9 after returning to his rented apartment drunk, the court said in a press release.
The next morning, the owners discovered the vandalized cars and called the police. The police reviewed the compound's security videos and observed a man entering Building 8 after taking a key to the cars, the court said.
Police officers interviewed each of the building's residents. After receiving a call from police, Wu turned himself in. He paid 15,000 yuan ($2,406) in compensation to the car owners.
The court said it gave him a lenient sentence because he admitted his guilt and made restitution.
