33-year fine tradition: Chinese FM’s annual first overseas visit extends China-Africa friendship (4)
As a staunch supporter of sustainable development in Africa, China has launched over 100 clean energy and green development projects under the framework of the FOCAC.
The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Kenya is completely built according to Chinese standards, and also with Chinese technologies and equipment. A total of 14 large wildlife passages and 79 bridges have been set up along the entire railway in consideration of the living habits and migration paths of wild animals. The bridge across the Nairobi National Park is equipped with sound deflectors to reduce noise caused by running trains.
The 50 MW Garissa solar power plant in Kenya, constructed by Chinese enterprises, is the largest solar plant in East Africa. Its average annual power generation can meet the needs of 380,000 residents of 70,000 households, and can reduce 64,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
At the FOCAC's Eighth Ministerial Conference held in 2021, the Declaration on China-Africa Cooperation on Climate Change was released, in which China showed its support for Africa’s Great Green Wall initiative of planting a wall of trees across Africa at the southern edge of the Sahara desert.
