'Key words on China' in the eyes of Singaporeans

Editor's note: China's President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Singapore from Nov. 6 to 7, 2015. Ahead of Xi's visit, reporters from the People's Daily All Media Platform interviewed Singaporeans about their impression of China.

Key word for China's characteristics - “Peaceful development”

From the state visits of President Xi, people can see how China insists on practical and peaceful foreign policy, said Lee Chian Siong, international news executive of Channel NewsAsia Singapore, an English language Asian cable television news agency and news channel.

Lee also said that as the second largest economy of the world, China has accumulated amounts of capital and technology, plus its "Belt and Road" Initiative and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will promote the construction of regional infrastructure and regional win-win development.

Key word for China's development - “Admirable”

A Singaporean who visited Shanghai in 2007 and then again this October said that compared with the situation in 2007, infrastructure, public services, standards of living and civilization accomplishment of Shanghai had greatly improved.

"I am amazed by changes in Shanghai," said the visitor, "I pay my admiration to China's government and the Chinese. I will travel to China more times than I did in the past."

Key word for China's trade - “No.1 in the world”

China is recognized as a major trading nation and achieves the world’s highest total trade volume, according to Teo Siong Seng, Chairman of the Singapore Business Federation. The "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" Initiative will promote the development of regional trade activities.

Teo mentioned that the Singaporean government and commercial circles welcome China's efforts to regard Singapore as a bridgehead to expanding regional cooperation with Southeastern and Southern Asian countries and other regions and to further promote interconnectivity.

Key word for China's contribution - “Benefit to the region”

Under the lead of the Chinese government, China's economic reform has achieved success over the past three decades, said Halimah Yacob, Singapore’s Speaker of Parliament. Yacob said that as a large country, China's actions and contributions not only benefit the country and its people but also the whole Asia-Pacific region.

Key word for China's culture - “Expression in the world”

During Xi's visit to Singapore, he will inaugurate a China Cultural Center alongside Goh Chok Tong, honorary "Emeritus Senior Minister" and watch a performance at the center.

Tsung Yeh, Music Director of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), will perform on the inauguration day. Yeh said that China is a large, global country and a one with an ancient civilization. Establishing Chinese Cultural Centers around the world shows how cultural exchanges have become an important part of state communication.

Cultural exchanges may help to solve problems that cannot be settled through political and economic means, according to Yeh.
