Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Seattle on Sept. 22 for his first state visit to the United States.
"I look forward to having in-depth exchange of views with President Obama and engaging the U.S. public, Xi said in an arrival statement."
People line up on the street in Seattle, holding national flags and banners to give President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan a warm welcome.
Xi Jinping used his index fingers to make a gesture indicating a Chinese character "ren", or “person” in English when delivering a major speech on China-U.S. ties during a welcome banquet jointly hosted by Washington State government and friendly communities. “The Chinese character ren is in the shape of two strokes supporting each other,” Xi said, while urging the two countries to boost people-to-people exchanges.
Xi: Building a new model of major-country relationship being the priority of China's foreign policy.
"There is no such things as the so-called Thucydides trap in the world. But should major countries time and again make the mistakes of strategic miscalculation, they might create such traps for themselves," he said.
Addressing the third China-U.S. Governors' Forum, Xi said China-U.S. cooperation at local level enjoys vaster space for development under the current circumstances.
Xi announced that China will provide financial support for 50,000 Chinese and U.S. students to study in each other's country and that the two countries will hold "Year of Tourism" in 2016.
