BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria will be fair and objective in investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Friday.
"China's position on the use of chemical weapons is consistent and clear. No matter who uses chemical weapons, we will firmly oppose the action," Hua Chunying told a regular press briefing in Beijing.
Hua said China hopes the UN commission will conduct investigations in line with relevant international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
The White House said in a statement on Thursday that the U.S. intelligence community found that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin, on a small scale against the opposition several times in the last year.
U.S. President Barack Obama has authorized sending U.S. weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, according to media reports.
Hua Chunying said China always holds that political settlement is the only practical way out for the Syrian issue.
Recently, the political solution has shown positive momentum, she said, noting that the international community is preparing for a conference on the conflict in Syria.
She hoped that all parties will seize the opportunity and work together to ensure the conference happens.
She called on all parties to push forward the political settlement process in a responsible way and avoid taking any actions to further militarize the Syrian crisis.
