Chance for face to face talks slim
In his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward a four-point proposal on the Palestinian issue, including support for Palestinian independent state, achieving peace through negotiations, adherence to the "land for peace" and providing an important guarantee for the peace process by the international community.
Experts believe these assertions reflect consistency of China's policy for the Palestinian issue. The expectation of the international community shows China is willing to make its contribution to the peace talks with positive attitude, active action, according to Pan Guang, Dean of Center of Jewish Studies Shanghai (CJSS) and Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Middle East Studies.
Talks between Abbas and Netanyahu in China will be unlikely although the two leaders stay in China simultaneously. Abbas is in Beijing between May 5 and 7, while Netanyahu arrived in Shanghai on May 6 and will fly to Beijing on May 8. Furthermore, leaders of the both sides had said no plan to hold face-to-face talks.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson had said China would be willing to arrange a meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu if they would like to.
