BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang held talks on Wednesday with President of the National Assembly of Ecuador Fernando Cordero on boosting bilateral ties.
Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), reviewed the growth of China-Ecuador relations since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1980.
He said China-Ecuador relations are now at a historic peak thanks to the bilateral efforts.
China appreciates Ecuador's adherence to the one-China policy and its precious support to China on issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet, according to Zhang.
As both China and Ecuador are in important periods of their development, there is huge potential for the two countries to work closely, the Chinese legislator said.
He proposed that the two countries maintain high-level visits, take care of each other's core concerns and enhance political trust.
Zhang called for more pragmatic cooperation, particularly in energy, infrastructure and finance, and more exchanges in culture, education, public health and tourism so as to solidify the foundation of people-to-people relations.
He also proposed stronger coordination on international issues so as to safeguard developing countries' rights and interests and promote a harmonious world.
On legislative ties, Zhang said the NPC places importance on developing ties with the National Assembly of Ecuador and would like to exchange more opinions on democracy, legal build-up, environmental protection and sustainable development.
He also called for the two legislative bodies to deepen communications in multilateral legislative organizations.
Cordero, who is on a week-long visit to China, hailed China's remarkable achievements, saying the country's path is successful.
He said Ecuador would like to step up exchanges with the Chinese government and legislature, work more closely in clean energy and infrastructure and exchange experience on improving people's livelihoods and eradicating poverty.
