ELEVEN vehicles were involved in a pile-up crash yesterday morning on the Xupu Bridge over the Huangpu River, and one driver was injured, police said.
The accident happened at 7:05am when a truck hit a minivan from behind, causing 10 vehicles in front to collide one after another.
The drivers were rescued in about 30 minutes after firefighters arrived. Only one driver had injuries but they were not life threatening. No details were available.
The pile-up led to a traffic jam for about two hours on the bridge as three of the four lanes were occupied in the aftermath of the accident.
Traffic authorities said they dispatched several trailers to take away damaged vehicles, including trucks, minivans and cars. The cause of the accident was still being investigated.
In another crash yesterday, two drivers were slightly injured when a truck rolled over on a Mercedes-Benz car at about 11am at the intersection of Pushen and Jiangyuan roads in Minhang District.
The truck driver said the Mercedes-Benz car ran the red light. To avoid the crash, the truck driver turned right but the truck rolled over and fell on the car.
Soil in the truck fell on the road but was quickly cleared.
Police said they were still investigating yesterday whether one of the drivers had run a red light before the accident.
