Two traders have been detained after police seized more than 2,500 high-quality counterfeit watches.
The watches confiscated are worth more than 99 million yuan (US$16 million), said the Pudong New Area police.
Officers said the batch of counterfeit watches were convincing copies, displaying fine workmanship that could easily fool customers into thinking they were genuine.
The suspects, surnamed Chen and Liang, confessed that the watches were purchased in Guangdong Province, said police.
Counterfeit watches, including brands such as Cartier, Omega and Rolex, were found on sale at a local market on March 27.
During investigations, police located where illegal deals took place.
Chen and Liang were detained several days later and a large number of watches found in their car, according to police.
The two said that they sold the fakes on to other traders.
The case is still under investigation, said police.
