6th ARF Peacekeeping Experts' Meeting held

BEIJING, October 17 (ChinaMil) -- The 6th Peacekeeping Experts' Meeting under the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) was held on the morning of October 16, 2013 at the Peacekeeping Center under the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China.

The meeting was organized by the Peacekeeping Affairs Office under the MND. China and the Kingdom of Cambodia jointly assumed the presidency of the meeting. More than 80 representatives from 25 member states of the United Nations and the ARF attended the meeting.

The theme of the meeting is to "strengthen pragmatic training cooperation and improve peacekeeping training level". Participants in the meeting will have an in-depth exchange of views and share experience on five sub-topics, namely, challenges for the UN peacekeeping operations, enhancement of peacekeeping training, enhancement of training for support detachments, security detachments, staff officers and military observers.

At the opening ceremony, Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), expressed that the Chinese government and the Chinese military would actively adapt to the new situation and new tasks, further strengthen capacity-building of peacekeeping troops, so as to effectively perform peacekeeping operations. He proposed that peacekeeping troop-contributing countries should make full use of various cooperation mechanisms, strengthen exchange of experience and promote resources sharing, so as to jointly improve various peacekeeping forces' overall level of training and capability for performing missions.

Hervé Ladsous, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said that the for the UN peacekeeping operations, training before dispatching troops is a precondition for success of peacekeeping operations and safety of peacekeepers. He wished the meeting a complete success.
