A ceremony marking the completion of the monument to the martyrs who laid down their lives in the campaign of liberating Hainan Island was held in the Liberation Park in Lingao County, Hainan Province, on April 2, 2013.
The construction of the monument, in memory of the soldiers of the 43rd Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), who sacrificed their lives in the campaign of liberating Hainan Island in 1950, started in October and was completed in December last year.
The campaign launched by the PLA to liberate the Hainan Island from the control of Kuomintang troops was jointly carried out by the 40th and 43rd Corps of the PLA. The two corps annihilated a total of 33 thousand Kuomintang troops in the campaign, in which more than 17 thousand Kuomintang troops were annihilated by the 43rd Corps with a casualty of 2707 soldiers.
More than 600 people including servicemen from the PLA Army and Navy units stationed in Lingao county,veterans and local people from all walks of life attended the ceremony.
