Photos of 19th-century Beijing to be auctioned in London

Auction house Sotheby’s is to put on sale Tuesday a collection of photos of Beijing, taken by the Italian-British photographer Felice Beato. Beato came to China in 1860 as a war photographer along with invading Anglo-French forces during the Second Opium War.

These rare photographs taken more than 150 years ago are thought to be among the first ever pictures taken of China.
