In Paris, at the ongoing 18th International Cultural Heritage Show at the Louvre Museum, two pieces of purple pottery from China is stunning visitors. Purple pottery, which is also known as red jade in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, has a history spanning centuries.
Ma Chenglin is a craftsman, specializing in purple pottery. His pottery works combine high quality materials, gorgeous techniques, and unique folk culture. His creations are among 60 other pottery pieces chosen from all over China to be shown in Paris.
Ma Chenglin said, "Each of my works represents Yunnan’s folk culture. I combined pottery making with engraving and Chinese calligraphy. The brightly coloured surface is shiny and when you knock it, the sound is like knocking on bronze or stone tablets. All of these features demonstrate the ancient ethnic side of China."
Jianshui purple pottery is considered to be among the four famous types of Chinese pottery, including Yixing pottery from Jiangsu Province, Qinzhou pottery in Guangxi Province and Rongchang pottery in Sichuan Province.
