Three top executives from British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline are in China to deal with a rising storm over corruption allegations. On Sunday, the executives held talks with representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.
Two days after the three GlaxoSmithKline executives’ arrival in China on Friday, they sat down to talks with the Chinese authorities. They face embarrassment over an alleged bribery scandal.
A spokesman from the Chinese Ministry of Public Security pointed out in the meeting that high ranking GSK employees had broken Chinese law by bribing Chinese officials and doctors to boost sales and raise the price of its drugs in China. The spokesman has urged GSK to take full responsibility and assist with the ongoing legal investigation in China.
GSK's President of Emerging Markets, Abbas Hussain, has made an official apology, stating that GSK is in full support of China’s anti-corruption campaign and will offer every assistance in the investigation. He's made assurances that every effort will be made to safeguard the the interests of Chinese consumers.
Right after the meeting, GSK issued another statement, saying high ranking employees within the company may have deliberately contravened industry regulations. It’s stated that GSK will not tolerate illegal practices by its staff. As GSK is fully aware of China’s health industry reform, GSK is committed to cooperating with the Chinese government and ensure Chinese patients and consumers' rights are protected.
The investigations are now underway.
