Water pipe burst affects 70,000 residents in Dubai

DUBAI, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The flooding caused by a water pipe burst near two neighborhoods has been ongoing for almost two days and has affected some 70,000 residents in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, local authorities said Saturday.

According to the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA), the entire water volume -- a lake of the size of several football fields -- will not be sucked out before Monday.

While no people were injured, hundreds of parked cars were slightly damaged.

The closure of roads has caused traffic congestion and brought the public transport to a halt. Only one road leading to the area was reopened late on Friday.

The water pipe went bust on Thursday night and soon led to the flooding of adjacent roads and the two neighborhoods.

Police immediately closed nearby roads and a DEWA emergency team rushed to the scene to fix the problem.

Many residents said they were forced either to stay at home or to spend the night outside suffering the 40-degree-Celsius heat on Thursday.
