VIENNA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Ambassador to Austria William Eacho confirmed Thursday that the NSA's PRISM program could well have been used to gather information from Austrian internet users.
Eacho gave Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner verbal confirmation that the program existed, the Kronen Zeitung reported, but said this would not follow in written form.
He also said no personal data of Austrians were gathered, but solely metadata, and the same also counted for companies based in Austria.
The news came after Austria attempted to receive an explanation from the USA since the Snowden incident first made global headlines.
