BELGRADE, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said Monday that Serbia has the ambition to complete accession negotiations with the European Union fast and to finish the whole process efficiently.
After meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy here, Dacic said the goal of Serbia is to earn membership in the European Union and to upgrade the quality of its internal reforms.
He expressed his appreciation to Van Rompuy on the engagement for Serbia to get a date to start accession negotiations with the EU.
He said he told the president of the European Council that it was a truly historic day for Serbia, because it is a process that will be implemented with no conditions and subsequent checks.
Van Rompuy said that Serbia has the full support of the European Council on the EU path, and pointed out to the need to continue efforts to substantially implement the agreement on the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.
He pointed out that the EU encourages the government of Serbia to establish the rule of law and to fight against organised crime and corruption, noting that the Union will provide Belgrade political and financial support for necessary changes.
