TUNIS, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. embassy released a statement on Wednesday expressing its "deep concern" over the sentences handed on the 20 assailants involved in last year's embassy attack, Radio Mosaique FM reported.

The 20 men have been convicted and given two-year suspended sentences for attacking the U.S. embassy in Tunis on Sept. 14, 2012.

On Wednesday, the U.S. embassy said in a statement that the verdicts were not adequate, insisting that "a deeper enquiry be conducted and that the instigators of the attack who are still on the run be tried."

The statement noted that the Tunisian government is " responsible for protecting the diplomatic missions and personnel present in Tunisia by virtue of international law."

"The Tunisian government has publicly declared its opposition to those who have resorted to violence. Through its acts, the Tunisian government must also demonstrate that there is no tolerance against those who use violence to reach their goals," said the statement.
