ST. PETERSBURG, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Russia's St. Petersburg city celebrated on Monday the 310th anniversary of its famous founding by Peter the Great in 1703.
Local authorities had planned a series of large-scale events in the city center over the long weekend, including a world record- breaking choir performance on the steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral on Sunday.
The highlight of Monday's Anniversary Day celebrations was a military music parade along the city's iconic central boulevard Nevsky Prospect, which added to the general festive atmosphere across the city as tens of thousands of locals took to the streets to celebrate their city's unique heritage.
"After 310 years, St. Petersburg remains a leader in many fields," St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko said in remarks dedicated to the city's anniversary. "Our city is a major international economic, scientific, cultural and sporting hub."
