CAIRO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged national understanding between the Syrian government and opposition and free elections as a solution for the ongoing Syrian conflict.
In an interview Wednesday evening with Egyptian state TV, Ahmadinejad, who is here to attend the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said "War creates war, and a government that assumes power through war will not last for long," recommending free elections to make the Syrian people decide for themselves.
He expressed grief for the Syrian people, saying "The people killed on both sides were Syrians."
The Iranian president said that all countries, including Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, the other three members of the quartet committee on Syria known as "the contact group", should exert efforts to stop the fighting and violence in Syria as soon as possible.
