NEW DELHI, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indian President Pranab Mukherjee Sunday signed a government ordinance on sexual crimes, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, which would lead to changes in laws against sexual crimes, said official sources.
The ordinance was adopted by the government on Friday. Based on recommendations by a judicial experts' commission, the Verma commission, it proposes harsher punishment, including death penalty for rapists who cause grievous harms to their victims, as well as acid attacks, voyeurism and trafficking.
This came after the horrifying gang rape in the Indian capital in December last year, in which a 23-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by six men on a moving bus and later died of inner injuries.
However, some women's groups have planned a protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday against the ordinance, saying the ordinance lacks teeth to fight sexual crimes against women.
The ordinance will also be presented to Parliament this month for approval.
