MOFCOM: Rice imports not a threat to food security

In the meantime, China's Commerce Ministry says the country's record-high rice imports will not push up global prices or threaten world food security, citing ample domestic supply.

The MOFCOM says that although China’s rice imports more than tripled over the last year, total inbound shipments accounted only for 1.7 percent of China’s domestic output.

The commerce authority also says China’s rice imports accounted for only 6 percent of the world’s total rice trade, and will not play a big role in pushing up global grain prices. It also reiterates that lower overseas prices are the main driving force behind the rise of imports.
