Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe recently made a high-profile announcement that the country will carry out "strategic diplomacy" with a global vision.
From forming the cabinet and officially taking office, Abe has been busy developing and introducing new diplomatic strategies lately.
Abe's "strategic diplomacy" is aimed at enhancing Japan's strategic position, increasing its regional and global clout, and ensuring that his "crisis breakthrough cabinet" makes significant political achievements by strengthening Japan's alliance with the United States, improving its strained relations with Russia and South Korea, and building closer ties with India and Southeast Asian countries.
This diplomatic plan is not fully targeted at China given its priorities, but the Abe cabinet clearly hopes to increase Japan's bargaining chips and room for maneuver when dealing with China.
However, it is doubtful whether the plan of "strategic diplomacy" will succeed. The plan is based on the wrong history and security concepts of Abe and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and is bound to be questioned and doubted by the outside world, which will greatly reduce its effects. Abe's plans to blur the stance of the war apology statements made by Tomiichi Murayama and Yohei Kono as well as increase Japanese military spending, build up armament, and strengthen collective defense will only damage Japan's relations with neighboring countries. The wrong history and security concepts will block the Abe cabinet's "global vision," making it difficult to carry out "strategic diplomacy."
