WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. government on Monday slapped sanctions on a senior commander of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for attacking U.S. forces in Iraq.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury designated Ali Mussa Daqduq al-Musawi for acting on behalf of Hezbollah and being responsible for numerous attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq, including planning an attack in 2007, which resulted in the deaths of five U. S. soldiers, said a statement released by the department.
Daqduq was previously in Iraqi custody, but he was released on Friday after the Iraqi government determined that "it no longer had a legal basis to hold him," according to the statement.
After the designation, any assets that Daqduq may have under U. S. jurisdiction will be frozen and Americans will be forbidden from engaging in transactions with him.
"Ali Mussa Daqduq al-Musawi is a dangerous Hezbollah operative responsible for planning and carrying out numerous acts of terrorism in Iraq," said Under Treasury Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen in the same statement.
Cohen said that the United States is "extremely disappointed" that Daqduq was set free, vowing to continue the effort to "bring him to justice."
