BRUSSELS, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Monday said it recognizes the Syrian opposition coalition as the "legitimate representatives of the aspirations of the Syrian people" at a foreign affairs council.
The EU welcomed the agreement reached on Nov. 11 in the meeting of the Syrian opposition groups gathered in Doha and in particular the formation of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, it said in a statement.
The EU "looks forward to this new coalition continuing to work for full inclusiveness, subscribing to the principles of human rights and democracy and engaging with all opposition groups and all sections of Syrian civil society."
The bloc said it was ready to provide support to the opposition coalition and assist in relations with the rest of the world.
It also voiced support for the efforts of the Joint Special Representative of the UN and the League of Arab States Lakhdar Brahimi, and called on opposition forces to engage with him in finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.
